This study explores the familial effects on Internet addiction among Taiwanese adolescents and their parents from a family system perspective, examining the impact of family cohesion and parental factors on parent–child internet addiction. The data are sourced from the “Taiwan i-Generation Panel Study,” collected in 2023 from seventh-grade students and their parents, comprising 2,699 parent–child dyads. This includes 751 mother-daughter, 686 mother-son, 628 father-daughter, and 634 father-son pairs. The results showed: (1) Mothers reported higher family cohesion, warmth and support, conflict and tension, and tolerance, while fathers reported higher digital literacy; adolescent girls exhibited higher tolerance than boys. (2) Parent–child relationships were categorized into four types: High Support, Alienation, Partial Conflict, and High Conflict. (3) Significant familial effects were found in both family cohesion and all three dimensions of Internet addiction. Furthermore, the familial effects on Internet addiction could be explained by family cohesion, parent–child relationships, and parental digital literacy. (4) Higher family cohesion and supportive parent–child relationships correlated with lower scores in all three dimensions of internet addiction. Conversely, relationships characterized as High Conflict or Partial Conflict displayed higher scores in the three dimensions. (5) The effect of family cohesion on internet addiction varied based on the type of parent–child relationship or parental digital literacy, with other interactions being complex. |
