This study investigates the associations between online social comparison and adolescents’ depressive moods and subjective well-being, with a focus on the mediating and moderating effects of secure, anxious, and avoidant attachment tendencies. Gender differences were also explored. Data were drawn from the Taiwan i-Generation Panel Study, comprising 4,431 valid questionnaires collected from seventh-grade students in 2023 (2,236 females). The results of t-tests and regression analyses reveal the following main findings: (1) Girls reported higher anxious attachment tendencies, more opinion-based social comparisons, and more depressive moods, but lower secure and avoidant attachment tendencies, less ability-based social comparisons, and lower well-being than boys. (2) Ability-based social comparison was associated with more depressive moods and lower well-being, while opinion-based online social comparison was related to greater well-being. (3) Secure attachment tendency was associated with greater opinion-based social comparison among boys; anxious attachment tendency was linked to more ability- and opinion-based social comparisons; avoidant attachment tendency was linked to more ability-based social comparison. (4) Ability-based social comparison significantly mediated the associations of anxious and avoidant attachment tendencies with adolescents’ depressive moods and well-being. (5) Secure attachment tendency buffered, whereas anxious attachment tendency intensified, the association between ability-based social comparison and depressive moods among girls; avoidant attachment tendency moderated the association between opinion-based social comparison and depressive moods among girls. These findings offer practical implications for practitioners concerned with adolescent mental health and adjustment. |
