Introduction
The International Conference on ‘Democracy, Empires and Geopolitics’ will be held on December 10-12, 2011, by the Center for Political Thought, RCHSS, Academia Sinica, Taipei, Taiwan.
In the last decades, we have witnessed our world moving fast from the end of the Cold War to a period of one great power, and again, seemingly, toward another age of competing empires. Looking back, however, such transition appears to be a rather familiar historical pattern, imposing significant influences upon both great powers and smaller democracies exposed to this struggle.
With the intensified global interdependence of finance, environment and risk, and the emerging transnational civil society, the unprecedented circumstances seem yet to provide our age and the age to come with difference possibilities than before.
This conference offers the great opportunity to inspire various opinions, exchange dialogs among diverse disciplines of political studies while discussing the old as well as novel struggle between democracy, empires and great power politics.
