The Research Center for Humanities and Social Sciences (RCHSS) is currently Academia Sinica’s only research center in the social science and humanities disciplines. It aims to foster research which is multi-disciplinary in nature, and is too difficult to conduct in other single-discipline institutes in Academia Sinica. Dr. Kong-Pin Chen is currently the director of RCHSS, and Dr. Te-Lan Chu and Dr. Fu-Kien Chang are the deputy directors.
RCHSS consists of five specific-topic research centers, including the Center for Asia-Pacific Area Studies (CAPAS), Center for Political Thought, Center for Institution and Behavior Studies (CIBS), Center for Geographic Information Science (GIS) and Center for Survey Research (CSR). Each specific-topic research center is headed by an executive director, who is in charge of and responsible for all academic activities within the center.
RCHSS is renowned for its multi-disciplinary research, especially for local social issues. The Center for Geographic Information Science conducts several research projects which employ GIS techniques to study issues in local public health, maritime history, and religion. Research associates in the Center for Institution and Behavior Studies use economics methodology to study issues in legal disputes and e-commerce. Besides in-depth, inter-disciplinary research on social issues, the center also provides expertise to the academic community. For example, CSR is widely considered to be the most reliable entity in conducting surveys in Taiwan.
