1813年，米憐受倫敦傳教會派遣抵達澳門，協助新教首位來華傳教士馬禮遜在華傳教。然而，由於種種原因，米憐無法在華留居，唯有遠赴馬六甲開闢新傳教基地。在馬六甲期間，米憐無論是在傳播上帝福音、興辦教育還是創辦報刊、翻譯以及文學創作等領域均均取得了巨大成就，奏響了近代基督教在馬六甲地區宗教、教育、文化事業最為燦爛、輝煌的樂章。

In 1813, William Milne, who was sent by the London Missionary Society, arrived in Macao to assist Robert Morrison, who was the first Protestant missionary in China. However, for several reasons, Milne couldn’t stay in China and had to move to Malacca to set up a new mission station. During his stay in Malacca, Milne made great achievements not only in promulgating gospels and establishing schools, but also in publishing a newspaper, translating the Bible and writing novels, all of which exerted great influence on the field of religion, education and culture in Malacca.
