This study analyses the Datuk Gong cult of Malay Archipelago from the non-Chinese perspective. It discusses the diverse practices of the Datuk Gong cult in Kuala Penyu district, in Sabah (Malaysia) by comparing fieldwork and literature materials. The social context of the field site differs from West Malaysia, which past research has focused on. Similar to the origin of Datuk Gong, the worshipers have multiple cultural backgrounds, and they have created the practices of cult, which is unique to Kuala Penyu. In addition, this article also analyzes the hypothesis that “Datuk” worship is the original Malay belief from the perspectives of linguistics and Sabah native belief. |
