This study examines Taiwanese immigrants’ encounters with microaggression in Europe and their coping strategies adopted before and after the COVID–19 pandemic. The present study surveyed 264 people online, followed up by qualitative asynchronous email interviews with 52 of those respondents. The results reveal that the COVID–19 pandemic has had negative impacts on Taiwanese immigrants’ social interaction experiences in host societies. The pandemic has also escalated the microaggressions encountered in Taiwanese immigrants’ daily lives. Accordingly, the pandemic has further pushed immigrants to change their coping strategies from disengagement to engagement while confronting microaggression. However, there were gender differences in the microaggressions experienced by the Taiwanese immigrants; in addition, such microaggressions were mainly committed by young white males in host societies. Notably, immigrants who have experienced microaggressions during the pandemic further strengthened their Taiwanese and Asian ethnic and group identities. Limitations and suggestions for further research are also discussed. |
