Abstract

Pirates were among the most threatening enemies of the Guangdong’s coastal defense force between 1804 and 1810. The Qing dynasty government appointed Nayancheng, Wu Xiongguang, and Bailing as the viceroys of Liangguang rebellion caused by the pirates. Notwithstanding this, the Guangdong Navy was defeated by the pirates. During this six-year period, the Guangdong’s coastal defense strategies were changed frequently, leading to a state of chaos by 1810. This article presents a discussion on the status of the Guangdong coastal defense force and the strategies adopted by it. It also analyzes the considerations leading to the changes in strategies, and sheds light on the reasons that the Qing government could eventually quell the unrest.
