Abstract

Japan’s democratic stability may rest partly on citizens who support authority rather than democratic constraint. Using the Japanese Asian Barometer Survey, this article asks whether authoritarian values separate democratic legitimacy from regime support and whether they are associated with partisan alignment toward incumbent power. The results show a consistent split: citizens with stronger authoritarian values are less likely to endorse democracy as always preferable but more likely to support the existing political regime. Per-wave authority-seeking models further associate authoritarian values with alignment toward the governing side among non-winner voters. I conceptualize this pattern as authority-seeking partisanship. Aggregate regime support may therefore overstate democratic resilience when it is grounded in authority and incumbency rather than in principled commitment to democratic procedures and constraints.
