This study explored the challenges faced by middle-aged and older women with disabilities during the COVID-19 pandemic and the strategies they adopted in response. Drawing on focus groups and in-depth interviews, the findings reveal that these women, due to intersecting identities of age, gender, and disability, experienced social exclusion, economic difficulties, increased caregiving responsibilities, and disrupted access to medical and social services. The government’s pandemic prevention policies have largely neglected the specific challenges and needs of middle-aged and older women with disabilities. Drawing on their embodied experiences and disability-related knowledge, these women developed adaptive strategies to cope with crises. Pandemic policies and disability services should consider the intersecting disadvantages and complex needs of middle-aged and older women with disabilities to protect their rights and social participation. |
