Abstract

This study investigated the relationship between family economic status and the college entrance channels of students from Tunghai University (THU). The primary results from the multinomial logit model (MNLM) suggest that the relative probability of entering THU via the application channel rather than taking the entrance examination is lower for disadvantaged students and students with a student loan. By contrast, disadvantaged students tend to enter THU via the star channel. Furthermore, the average marginal effects derived from the MNLM results reveal that the probability of entering THU via the application channel is approximately 3.3% lower for disadvantaged students than for non-disadvantaged students, and 2.4% lower for students with a student loan than for students without a student loan, whereas the probability of entering THU via the star channel is 3% higher for disadvantaged students. Overall, the results suggest a significant relationship between family economic status and college entrance channels.
