Abstract

This study analyzes how factors such as attitudes toward divorce, political party affiliation, and stance on Taiwan’s independence influence Taiwanese people’s views on same-sex marriage, based on the “2020 Taiwan Social Change Survey.” The results show that those who view divorce as acceptable, support pan-green parties, and favor Taiwan’s independence, are more likely to support same-sex marriages. The mechanisms through which these factors shape opin-ions are explored, finding that national identity heavily relies on party politics. Moreover, individuals without party affiliations who prefer the status quo tend to oppose same-sex marriages, reflecting resistance to change driven by tradi-tional family values. This analysis highlights the cultural divide within Taiwanese society regarding major issues.
