Abstract

Many researchers have reflected on the challenges faced by female creative workers entering the workforce, but few have focused on the attraction and exclu-sion experienced by male blue-collar workers in cultural and creative industries (CCIs). From the perspectives and experiences of working-class male students and workers in CCIs, this study interviews 92 respondents to analyze how Taiwan’s CCIs shape class and gender. It explores how these men, who have moved into a new field, reinterpret, experience, and respond to class and gender norms in the work environment. Further, it examines the opportunities and limitations that CCIs poses for these working-class men. In summary, the study findings revealed the diminishing influence of gender and emphasis on class, paradox of craving freedom while needing self-discipline in creative labor, and self-struggle and avoidance of work in response to structural disadvantages.
