  • 演講摘要 : The threat of disinformation is strongly featured in public discourse, but scientific findings remain conflicted about disinformation's effects and reach in digital communication environments. Accordingly, indiscriminate warnings about disinformation risk overestimating its effects and associated dangers. Balanced accounts acknowledging the presence of digital disinformation while accounting for empirically established limits offer a promising alternative, as perceived risks have led to widespread public support for stricter control measures, even at the expense of individual speech rights. In two studies in the US context, I first tested the negative downstream effects of alarmist disinformation discourse in a survey experiment. Furthermore, I examined with open questions who people blame for spreading disinformation and who they think should be obligated to fix the problem. I show that alarmist disinformation discourse increases citizens' support for heavily restrictive regulation of speech in digital communication environments and lowers their satisfaction with democracy.
