【About the Talk】
This presentation examines an armed group not as an actor of political movement but as an agent of social transformation. Shan are ethnic minorities in Burma (currently Myanmar), and part of them have engaged in armed rebellion since 1958. Since Shan is close to Thai people in Thailand, Shan armed groups established their military bases along Thai-Myanmar borderlands. A town of Piang Luang is no exception. This town functioned as a military headquarters of the Shan United Revolutionary Army (SURA). The existence of the armed group accelerated migration of Shan people to Thailand, and urged traders into cross-border trading. Furthermore, the town became a hub for Shan cultural movements. Even after the dissolution of the SURA, its influence can still be observed today.
