Family is an emotional experience and a social location where care and conflict comingle. The word, family, has many meanings, occupying spaces as privately and publicly diverse as the personal, the social, and the political. The meaning of family changes over time, but certain beliefs about what a family is and what it does are fixed in the popular imagination. Families are stratified internally by gender (where women are often considered subordinate) and generation (where the very old and young are marginalized). Families are also stratified externally, by structural systems of power that oppress or privilege people by race, class, sexuality, gender, nationality, ability, age, and other ways that differences are perceived. Despite the variations in how people live within and make meaning of family, rigid ideas about what a family should be are often promoted and enforced. I examine the families in which we actually live, as compared to The Family that scholars and practitioners often conceptualize, measure, and serve. I draw upon my own experiences living in families that have been either marginalized or celebrated, depending on how they fit normative standards, as a way to enliven our analysis of family life in the hope of creating a more conscious and inclusive family science.
